Claude Mythos: A New Frontier in AI-Powered Cybersecurity

Understanding what Claude Mythos is, how it is relevant to India, and why everyone is talking about it?

In April 2026, AI company Anthropic quietly unveiled something that sent shockwaves through the tech and cybersecurity worlds and in India, it reached the desks of bank chiefs, and government agencies: Claude Mythos. Unlike typical AI chatbots designed for writing or coding, Mythos is a frontier AI model capable of autonomously finding and exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in software - at a speed and scale no human team can match.

Anthropic kept Mythos private and launched Project Glasswing - named after the Glasswing butterfly - to uncover hidden cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The gated program initially included 12 vetted partners, such as AWS, Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase and CrowdStrike, and was later extended to select countries including India. Days later, however, the US government ordered Anthropic to suspend Mythos access for all foreign nationals, including in India, citing national-security concerns and pausing the country’s participation.

In simple terms, Mythos does the work of a skilled security researcher - reading millions of lines of code, spotting flaws and reasoning like an attacker - but at massive scale. That's also the risk: the same skill that finds a vulnerability, can exploit it. Anthropic calls this the "dual-use" problem, which is why access stays tightly controlled rather than public.

Why This Matters for India?

For India - a nation rapidly digitizing with initiatives like Digital India, UPI, and critical infrastructure in finance, healthcare and energy - Mythos offers transformative defensive potential:

  • Identify weaknesses in software before attackers exploit them

  • Strengthen resilience in power grids, banking systems and government portals

  • Upskill cybersecurity professionals in AI-driven threat detection

  • Patch vulnerabilities proactively, reducing the cost and impact of post-breach remediation

During testing, Mythos discovered thousands of vulnerabilities in mere hours, including vulnerabilities dating back 10–20 years. It can reconstruct source code from deployed software, map network and even chain multiple small flaws into devastating attacks.

Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

Claude Mythos is making headlines because it represents, a paradigm shift. AI can now find security flaws faster than even the best human hackers. This has triggered emergency meetings between the White House, major banks and tech leaders. It has sparked worries among financial institutions, that hackers could use Mythos to run automated attacks. It has led to debates over how to regulate powerful AI models without slowing down progress. And it has set off a race among security teams worldwide to adopt Mythos before attackers do.

The Future Outlook: Dual-Use Technology

Mythos is a dual-use tool - can defend or destroy. Anthropic’s goal is to put these capabilities in defenders’ hands first, for finding and fixing flaws before adversaries build similar tools.

Here's a glimpse of what's coming next:

  • More businesses will adopt AI-driven cybersecurity as a standard practice, not an exception.

  • Governments and AI companies may build joint oversight frameworks, such as "Know Your AI Customer" (KYAIC), to track who gets access to powerful models.

  • Patching will need to happen at machine speed, shrinking the gap between when a flaw is found and when it gets exploited.

  • India is expected to play a larger role in AI cybersecurity, as more of its organizations gain access to these tools.

Claude Mythos isn’t just another AI model - it’s a cybersecurity wake-up call.
